Ngorongoro Crater

Serengeti Map   One of nature's true wonders and a photographer's paradise! The crater, a UNESCO world heritage site, is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera on the globe. It is 610 m deep and the flat crater floor covers 265 square kilometers. The steep sides of the crater mean that it has become a natural enclosure for a very wide variety of wildlife including elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, lions, leopards, hyenas, serval cats, jackals, bushbucks, elands, waterbucks, wildebeest, many antelopes, and large variety of birds. The crater is a sight that you will always remember.

However, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area offers more than just the crater. The crater highland is a beautiful and unique landscape with alkaline soda lakes, a series of peaks and volcanoes, dense rain forests, and remote Maasai villages.

The Ngorongoro crater and the Ngorongoro crater highland are part of many of our safari itineraries. Our Highview Hotel is conveniently located close to the entrance to the Conservation Area, just 13 km from the crater. If you have the time to spend a few days in the area, you can take part in the activities and hikes in the Conservation area offered by Highview Hotel.

Crater camping

Total for an extra day at Crater on the mountain will be USD 365 per person. (The crater supplement is USD 200 per person per day and extra day on the mountain USD 165 per person).

610 m (2,000 ft) deep and its floor covers 260 km2 (100 sq mi)

The crater has the densest known population of lions, numbering 62 in 2001. On the crater rim are leopards, elephants, mountain reedbuck and buffalo .
